December Favourites

Sneaking in a December Favourites before 2015 comes to a close because I've found some favourites worthy of mention. December's been pretty crazy- work was extremely stressful and hectic in the lead-up to the Christmas season but the holiday period has been great to take a breather and relax. I've been feeling spendy and buying presents for others and presents for myself and I'm looking forward to ringing in the new year in a couple of days! I've found some great products that I can highly recommend because they've impressed me greatly in some form during the month of December!

X | New Years Resolutions

With 2015 coming to an end, I decided to post about my resolutions for 2016. I've already made some preparations for the new year, including a planner and a new bag (shoutout to my brand spanking new beige Longchamp Le Pliage!) and I think that making goals for the new year, especially when they're related to the content on my blog, is a good thing to post about.

IX | A Food Lover's Guide

Brisbane's a small town, and a big city, with dreadful or delightful weather depending on how you're feeling and the food scene can be viewed as 'cute' and small-time or big and booming depending on your expectations. I've found some delicious gems among a myriad of new names cropping up everyday and I'm a repeat visitor because most of the time I'd rather go back to places that I know and love instead of taking a risk that it might be a subpar experience everytime I want food. In this post I've compiled my favourite places to eat in 3 categories so whether you're in the mood for coffee, casual or classy, I hope you find something you'll want to try!

VIII | Interior Design and Tidying

For day 8 of the 12 Days of Christmas I'll be posting about tidying, rearranging and personalising space because it's a topic close to my heart. I've loved having my own room and the space it gives me to make it my own. I recently finished reading The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying by Marie Kondo, world-renowned tidying guru and to be completely honest I have not yet undergone the process of tidying which she advises, but I did enjoy reading the book and taking everything with a grain of salt.

VII | 2015 Highlights

2015 has been a great year and I feel like I've grown a lot and have begun the transition into adulthood. I'm graduating University in a semester, working and learning more everyday. I'm thoroughly looking forward to what the new year holds, as well as missing simpler times when I didn't have to make real world decisions and life was carefree.

VI | Had Me A Blast

Since finishing school for the year, I've been busy planning 12 Days of Christmas blogposts, working and enjoying date nights with my boyfriend- we've been treating ourselves to visiting new and favourite restaurants on Friday nights. I'm hurriedly getting this post in because I've been extremely stressed at work with everybody going on holiday, and unfortunately I haven't had time to take photos I'm happy with for my content. Hope you enjoy these photos and seeing a bit of what I've been up to in my down time!

Saw the Taylor Swift 1989 World Tour with 4 awesome Swifties and had the best time! Our seats were really good and that helped a lot. She's so cute and adorable and such a showman.

V | Present Wrapping

I love presenting gifts in interesting ways, like in an upcycled box or a pretty ornament. This post combines my love for gifting and decorative elements (pretty much exclusively kikki.K) in a few ideas of gift presentation. I love swaddling presents in boxes, paper, ribbons and gift tags and just like how Masterchef has taught us about presentation being key to good food, the wow-factor presents can be attributed not just to the thoughtful and lovingly prepared gift, but also to the presentation.

IV | Beachy Bronze

I've wanted to try Josie Maran's product line since I heard about it from Vivianna years ago, but I wasn't drawn to any of the products enough to take the plunge - the Coconut Watercolour Cheek Gelee in Poppy Paradise was very tempting - but when I swatched the Coconut Watercolour Eye Shadow in Beach Sand, I knew it was coming home with me.

III | Gifting Tips

If you've read, heard of or completed the test for the 5 Love Languages, you'll know that for some people, gift-giving is a major way for them to express love and appreciation emotionally and I am one of those people. I love giving gifts to loved ones and no gift makes me more satisfied than 'the perfect, thoughtful, useful yet often elusive present'. I know that present ideas can be quite a challenge and in this post I'm going to share some of my tips for gift giving and ideas.

II | S/S Lips and Cheeks Edit

The thing I love most about spring and summer makeup are the gorgeous corals, pinks and peaches for lips and cheeks. I pulled some of my favourites out of my stash and decided I would make an attempt to get more wear out of these gorgeous shades.

I | Unboxing my kikki.K 2016 Planner

For Day 1 of 12 Days of Christmas blogposts, I'm unboxing my planner for 2016! Not only is it a motivating initiative for the new year, but planners can also double as a pretty and functional Christmas present. I've been using diaries for many years and I started using kikki.K diaries a few years ago when my best friend gifted me one for my birthday. I've loved using them ever since and I've been buying diaries annually from kikki.K and Typo, experimenting with the daily, weekly and monthly view diaries. In anticipation of 2016, I decided to take the plunge and try a kikki.K leather planner (link to their range here!).

November Favourites

The past month has been one of treating my hair well, taking care of my skin, and getting my health and fitness on track. November was stinking hot, and it's only going to get hotter. I had a good November in other aspects too- my internship turned into paid work and the 2015 academic year came to an end, so I only have one semester of University left before graduation! I don't have any grand plans for the summer break- I'm just working full-time and taking a week off to go to an annual Bible Training Conference in January. I'm planning on doing 12 Days of Christmas blogposts in the lead-up to the 25th, as I'm a bit too busy to do 25 consecutive days of blogging.

Rose Addicted

I love my lip balms, lipsticks and lip tints but I can't say I've ever been a lover of lip liner though I think I've been converted with my latest lip product purchase! I purchased the Rimmel Exaggerate Full Colour Lip Liner in Addicted which at 40% off in Priceline's sale (making cheap even cheaper!) and I can't stop wearing them!

I love the pigmented, smooth application and it's mechanical so you can twist to wind up more pencil as needed instead of sharpening it. It's a gorgeous brown-based rose that is very similar to my natural lip colour and I think it works quite well on my skintone. My sister tried it on and as she's more tan than I am, it looked a bit too flat and dull on her so I think it would suit fairer skin tones. I've found a new favourite lip combo in colouring my lips with the Addicted pencil and blotting, followed by a layer of the Clarins Instant Light Natural Lip Perfector in 01 Rose Shimmer, which is a sheer yellow-based pink balmy gloss. I've been tempted by the lip pencil in East End Snob from the same range, which has been touted by Amelia Liana as a dupe for the Charlotte Tilbury Lip Cheat in Pillow Talk, but when swatched I find it to be too pink for my taste. I much prefer the MLBB (my-lips-but-better) hue of Addicted. I would lip swatch but I can't take photos that I'm happy with (sorry).

Counterproductive Habits

So I'm contemplating doing 'blogmas' this year- because my readers can't wait to hear about my new favourite lip liner, obviously... (Not joking about finding a new, pretty lip liner though) I'm adjusting for a work-life balance and that involves treating myself to online shopping, coffees and junk food because 'I push myself so hard at work', going running, forcing myself to eat superfood salads for lunch and starting that cycle all over again. Not looking forward to hot, humid summer months and needing to epilate my legs all the time... Talk about a first world problem.

S/S 15 Skincare

After using the same skincare products for the past 10 months, I decided it was time to shake things up. My skin was going through some odd breakouts and I realised switching out a couple of products at a time did wonders. I've tried most of these products at some point and decided to recollect and have another dig at them to help my poor skin out.

Loving Food Too Much

Being counterproductive is the only way to describe my lifestyle in the past two weeks. I've been working out, going running with my eager little dog, but I've also been eating not-the-healthiest food! I had a dear friend check in with me on my healthy lifestyle change thing that I claim to be attempting and afterward I had a long hard think about what I'm doing. My problem used to be motivation to exercise, but now I've been exercising and I've not been motivated to eat healthily.

Basically I'm going to try to go back to 'eating clean', which by my definition is cutting out processed foods and sugars and making sure all my main meals are at least 50% vegetables, have some protein (egg, chicken breast, lean meat) and don't have a tonne of sugar or bread. And I love bread. That makes me sad. Regardless, I've got some yum-worthy photos (and some unrelated to food) since my last personal post, so enjoy!

September + October Favourites

A few fish-eye shots of my standout products from the past two months! The line between September and October blurred for me, as routine and deadlines caused time to pass incredibly quickly. I feel like October has whizzed by too, because it seems like just yesterday that people were talking about Halloween and it's finally passing. Personally I take no interest in Halloween but with all the merchandise everywhere, it's almost impossible to avoid. I've been extremely busy handling life- I'm working as a student urban planner 4 days a week and completing 3 University assignments and studying for an exam so blogging has had to take a backseat for a while but I attended a Brisbane blogger/vlogger event last week and acquired a number of new products to trial so there's more content coming!

Tresemme Perfectly UnDone Dry Defining Spray and Wave-Creating Sea Foam for Soft Waves
I've wanted to try these products since they came out and I resisted until they went on sale. They finally went on sale and I bought the dry defining spray and went back for the foam the next day. I have naturally wavy hair and I love the shampoo and conditioner from the same Perfectly UnDone line because it embraces the shape of natural waves and smooths the frizz. I love this combo for accentuating my natural waves- just pat in the foam, scrunch, leave to air dry and spritz in the texturising spray.

On Rotation: Spring

Spring is here, and I've found I've settled into a good routine when it comes to skincare, body care, haircare and makeup, which I thought I'd share in this seasonal 'on rotation'-style post. I've pilfered this post from Michelle, who filched it from somebody else. Her rifling-in-your-bathroom-cupboard tendencies resonates with me- many a time my friends have handed over their makeup bags at my request to have a good rootle. I'd Rather Be Blogging

It's Jaracanda season! Spring blooms are synonymous with crunch time for university assignments and exams and I haven't had a lot of time to blog about beauty products so this is going to be a personal post- my usual slice of my life via photos and captions.

Met Tasha of shiwashiful fame for Kiss The Berry acai bowls before The Doll Connection bloggers' event on Saturday! I've wanted to visit KTB for lunch but it's all the way across the city, and it was located relatively close to the event.

Spring Resolutions

Life has been good- lots of skincare action, good food and great friends. I love Brisbane weather from March-October when it's on the cooler side and this affects my mood greatly. I don't like Brisbane's warm weather because I never know how to dress for the heat.

My 'healthy' lifestyle motivation comes in fits and spurts and recently I've been motivated to do more about it, like picking up the BBG circuit training and eating less refined sugar and carbs and drinking more herbal teas. Whether it's sport or solo workouts, I'm not naturally inclined to get up and at 'em. I'm more inclined to the less athletic types of workouts like pilates, yoga, jogs/running or circuits- you know, so you don't drag other people down with you in your lack of athleticism.

I'm not making a drastic change to my diet because I don't think I would have the willpower to stick to it. I'm just cutting a few things out and consciously choosing the healthier option when I can. Eating a good breakfast helps me not to snack and while I absolutely love my cappuccinos, tea is where it's at. I consume much more water when I have it by my side, and a 1L plunger of green or herbal tea with lemon and ginger is a habit I'm glad to have established. Having said that, this post does contain a cake pop, a Magnum and some other treats so I'm not being all that good.

I'm going to buy more activewear, little socks (that don't show) and running shoes because at the moment I have to borrow most of the gear from my sister. I'm thinking of getting the clothes from Forever 21 because Lorna Jane is just ridiculously expensive. What do you girls think?

First. and Fine Foods

Since my last post, I attended two beautiful weddings of 4 friends, traveled up to one of Queensland's most prominent tourist beaches for a geography field trip and ate some great food- I even made my own date and chia muesli and cooked dinner a couple of times. We're currently on 'mid-semester break' if you can call it that when it's 10 weeks into a 13-week semester and I have 1 day of class so I get all of 1 day's break. Working the rest of the week per usual is less than relaxing but I'll get used to it. I've got coffee and good food to power me on!

Coffee from Genie's- a cafe I've never tried before! It was alright- nothing to write home about.

Cinnamon Buns and the City

I've been having a pretty cruise-y couple of weeks but Uni assessment tasks are looming and the weather is warming up, which makes me sad because I do love winter so. I've been trying to get my fit and healthy state going- eating breakfast quite loyally, and I've declared my love for ALDI before but I discovered their Just Organic Muesli Clusters with freeze-dried berries and it is SO GOOD (I like it with almond milk for the taste). I've also been trying to keep up with the Kayla Itsines' BBG- it's so tough that I do about 10 mins before feeling too lazy to press on but I'll keep trying. I hope I manage to endure this as a long-term fitness initiative and make it part of my lifestyle so it's not a passing fad, because it'll help me feel better and have more energy overall. That being said, the majority of this post is carby food, as usual...

The Doughnut Bar's setup in the city is so cute! The fairy lights and bar set up makes for such a nice escape from the office. I keep meaning to venture over here during my lunch break but the $6 doughnuts are all the way across Queen Street Mall; it's a long walk.

Brunette Brow Game

If you ask me, the 'brows on fleek' and 'brow game strong' era is waning, but good brows have always been a staple in the daily face- see Jeremy Renner's 'frame the face' moment. Whether you do it by pencil, powder, paste or pomade, brows have stood the test of time and I know from experience that brunettes on the darker end of the spectrum used to have trouble finding products to suit their brows and their colouring. Thankfully, this is no longer the case.

August Favourites

This month's favourites is themed 'dying in the workplace' because I started workplace practicum on the 4th and I spent all month long adjusting to the hours, restless sleep and troubled skin that resulted from this transition. I wasn't sleeping as soundly as I used to, and my skin decided it would be opportune to sprout some spots worthy of my prepubescent days. Wearing makeup on a near-daily basis meant I started to take cleansing more seriously so all up my skincare arsenal is in a good place at the moment.

These Are Addictive

August so far has been an overwhelming month, full of change and transition. It's been an emotional rollercoaster but filled with blessings like good food and great friends! Most recently I've been watching The Legend of Korra, as a followup to watching Avatar: The Last Airbender last year (I didn't want to watch the sequel right after finishing the first series because I thought it was weird; I was still emotionally attached to the first round of characters), and we returned to Victoria Park Golf Course's 18-hole putt-putt mini golf with a bunch of friends, and had round 2 at good old Maxy B's (Max Brenner) for hot chocolates with crunchy waffle balls. I mention these because I haven't recorded them by way of photos, but here are a few photos from what I've been doing for the rest of August!

Poppies from Daisy's at Toowong for my sister! So sculptural and pretty.

She Cooks, She Eats

This is a photo post that is mostly of food I've made and eaten. I've been quiet on the blog front lately because I've commenced corporate work! It's my first time working 8 hour days and it can be quite exhausting so I'm getting used to that. I only have classes on one day of the week but it's a full 7 hours without a break so I have to sneak in a quick lunch between sessions or my stomach will make disruptive grumbling noises.

Tried making white chocolate fondants with a spiced raspberry coulis. It oozed but the cake caved in a bit when I cut into it because I had trouble figuring out how long to bake them for.

July Favourites

My July teemed with baked goods and nourishing skincare because Brisbane experienced a record low temperature of 3. I ate a lot of steak, balanced that out with green tea and steamed vegetables, and watched a load of movies. I've had it pretty easy for the past four weeks, but it's back to the grind now!

La Dolce Vita

The sweet life- and I think it rings true in both senses. Our winter break's reaching a close and I think I've made good use of this past month- I've read some books that I've been meaning to for a long time, I've been cooking up a storm in the kitchen every other day and I've had time for friends in a way that I'm not afforded during the academic term. Definitely a sweet life.

Caved when we were in the area and tried a blueberry-glazed from Donut Boyz! I think this is a phase that will pass.

Running on Empty

Conveniently finishing up a round of products almost simultaneously! This is the second round of empties that I've attempted doing lately because I misplaced my first bag of empty packaging and was rummaging around bathroom and bedroom and wailed to boyfriend and sister about losing what is essentially a bag of trash that I had been meaning to blog about.

Piece o' Cake

It feels so good to have a midyear break! I've been spending my previous couple of weeks busy in the kitchen, where I love whipping eggs and sifting flour to make food and baked goods. I'm also getting back into reading- finishing off a couple of books that I've had around for a while now. Another thing I'm finishing are beauty products, so you may see a picture or two of those pop up soon. Hope everybody's enjoying the gorgeous weather that both hemispheres are experiencing at this time of year!

Peter and I made lemon meringue pie! (A little bit imperfect because I didn't fully dissolve the sugar into the meringue so you can see the dots of sugar crystals.) I've made it before but using frozen pastry and now that I've made the real deal, I can't go back! It just doesn't compare and shortcrust pastry is so easy to whip up.

Got a haircut! Went to Just Cuts at Indooroopilly and a lovely guy named Marcus did a fantastic job of giving me a good blended trim and quick little treatment. My hair felt so much better and healthier afterward and I'm really liking the feeling of having less hair to deal with. Trying out the new Tresemme Perfectly Undone shampoo and conditioner so I'll see how that goes.

June Favourites

Let's all take a moment to breathe a sigh of relief because July means winter holidays. June is never a fun month for me or hundreds upon thousands of fellow University students as it means final exams and mega stressful days, but between the teas, coffees, hours of staring at the blue light of computer monitors and 7mm lined note-papers, I picked up some solid favourites to share! I'm using a few things I got in my latest Priceline skincare spree but as I've only been using them for a week, I'll wait until next month to see how they turn out on a longer term.

Holding My Breath

And exhale... These past couple of weeks has been uber stressful (do people even use uber as an adjective anymore?) and I'm so relieved to be done with the closing round of exams for yet another semester. Set to graduate mid-2016, so I should only have 2 more rounds of them to handle! This is just going to be a short and sweet little picture post because I finished exams yesterday so I've been been cooking and vegging out to Netflix (nearly finished Daredevil at the moment!) to my heart's content. I hope you guys aren't bored with seeing shared content between my Instagram and these types of posts! I guess I like elaborating a bit on my pictures more than Instagram allows.

Some of the Priceline Skincare bag contents and some of the purchases I/my sister made to obtain the bag. I'm not going to need to buy face cleanser, body lotion, hand cream or lip balm for a very long time. It was a really good one this year too! Hashtag noragrets

Sensi Whitening

I've been raving about the scar-lightening wonder that is La Roche-Posay's Sensi White Essence since October last year, and now that I'm running out I looked to repurchase it, only to find that it's apparently been discontinued. I turned to its cream counterpart instead- the Sensi White cream- to replace it. (Part of what I bought in getting that skincare freebie bag that everybody's mad about now!)

Study, Eat, Repeat

Besides making up batches of granola and granola clusters, I've spent the past week being anxious and stressing about exams, then stepping away from the cramming to do other things (like attend birthday parties and professional meetings), before going back to the books to study for the next one and I seem unable to extract myself fully from the cramming headspace; I guess it's a good thing, because I don't think I've ever been this studious in my life. I've been pretty Type-B about my studies until last year because the fact that graduation is in sight is enough to frighten/give me a boot up the ass to put more effort in. I was too busy to watch State of Origin with friends- hopefully I'll be able to join them when the third game rolls around!

Making granola with cinnamon/vanilla/maple/peanut butter/blueberries for the first time- forgive the mixture of oats- I know they're meant to be exclusively rolled oats. PS: Doesn't the brown sugar look cute/funny in the balled-up tablespoons?!

Mermaid Vibes

Exams have hit and at UQ we're currently in the middle of swotvac. The one week where half the student body are partying, while the other half are committing hari-kari with the stylus of their transformer laptop. I thought I'd update with a few photos of what I've been up to and I'll post about something exciting when the exams are over and the month-long winter break begins.

Sister's sneaky sniping at brunch. Mouth half-open, mid-complaint about being hungry and wondering where our parents were.
In comparison, my ray of sunshine of a sister.

What's In My Bag?

The last time I did a bag post was in 2013 (link here!) and that bag served me faithfully until it died a sudden death in Target a couple of months ago when the strap broke irreparably. I'd been on the lookout for a reasonably priced replacement that was appropriate for both casual use and more professional environments so when I found the Iva Plate Tote from Colette by Colette Hayman I was happy. When it went on sale in May I was overjoyed.

New In | Winter 2015

I found myself incorporating a few new products into my routine and I thought I'd share because it rarely happens. (I walked into Priceline for mascara and came out with a bag of stuff. You know how it goes.)

May Favourites

I've been trying some new things and loving some old this May. My skin is going through a rough patch from stress and the changing weather but hopefully once we clear swotvac and exams life will be peaceful for the month-long winter break we have from University classes. I had a good May- it was full of good food, fun with friends and some major schoolwork that I'm just praying will produce decent results. (Can you tell I'm in my final year? Eeek. So not ready for the real world but at the same time I can hardly wait until I get there.)

Sweater Weather

Since my last personal post I've been busy doing class readings and attempting to study for finals and taking care of an issue with my Maltese/Shih-Tzu dog Toby so we've had to go to the vet a couple of times. I want to go for a haircut soon and I have a few friends with twenty-firsts around this time of year so that's always good fun. Busy busy busy. And I didn't forget- there's a May favourites coming!

Fun with the film camera. I've got a couple of shots left before I have to take my current roll to Kmart's Photo Center to get those done.

A/W Skincare Solution II

This is the second part of my skincare routine as the follow-up for my first post on my daily skincare routine! This one's about masks, makeup removers and blemish treatments for my combination acne-prone skin in the cooler seasons as it's autumn/winter in Australia now.

A/W Skincare Solution I

This is the first post of two that documents my skincare routine for the cooler seasons this year. This one will be about my daily skincare routine and part two will be about extras like masks and makeup removers. To clarify, I have combination skin, with dry cheeks and an oily nose, that is prone to blemishes subject to usual factors like quantity and quality of sleep, diet, water intake and hormones. I like using a mixture of brands in my skincare routine, varying from French to Asian to what you can find in Mecca Maxima, but I do watch how much I spend as I'm a full-time student without a job so I don't splurge on high-end brands very often. I've spoken about these products in previous posts but I'm posting about it in one big official post as I've got my skincare routine down pat and it involves just a handful of products.

Trialing Trilogy

I recently received this little freebie from a (male) friend (who was completely indifferent about it) and I, on the other hand, was extremely excited to replenish my stocks of Trilogy products because everything I've tried from the NZ brand has been very effective and nourishing (just like fellow Kiwi Antipodes!). Given the adorable tin bauble, I believe this little kit is from Christmastime and it contains miniature samples of 'Trilogy's Favourites'.

Let Me Down Easy

I'd like to think I've learnt to be more discerning in my beauty purchases but it's inevitable that there are some occasions when I'm not 100% won over. This post is dedicated to those products that disappointed, didn't work for me, or were not worth any hype there was.

Dining Fine: 85 Miskin Street

This Saturday we ventured to brunch, which is a rarity because after years of brunching I've become quite immune to the charms of poached eggs, pancakes and waffles that I can easily whip up at home. However, we ate at 85 Miskin Street and enjoyed our meal. I'd heard of 85 Miskin Street a couple of years ago but only visited recently thanks to my brother. My brother discovered Scoopon this year and gifted us with a couple of breakfast Scoopons that he purchased but could not use within the free time he has in his FIFO schedule. We visited on a Saturday morning around 10 am and apart from the treacherous Toowong hills that it's sitting amongst which make parking and manoeuvreing quite difficult, the 85 Miskin Street breakfast dining experience was great.

It's Always Darkest Before the Dawn

We're having a bit of a lull between major assignments and final exams so I thought I'd take the opportunity to post a few photos of what I've been up to when it's quiet on the blog front. I haven't worked this hard academically in my life and considering it's fourth and final year, it's about time I did, huh? The weather's chilling down too, which I adore, and the sunny, crisp days remind me of being in Switzerland on Italian exchange again- right down to the unreasonably warm midday when you have to carry your coat instead of wear it.

Birthday Happy Socks gifted from a friend, L'Occitane Arlesienne and Caudalie Vinotherapie hand creams and sheet masks- Tony Moly ones from W Cosmetics (when I needed to make the eftpos minimum, oh the desperation) and The Face Shop from my sister when she was talked into buying the entire range in a box set from the brand's shop in Singapore. So ready for winter!

Care package for someone's winter sniffles- canned soup, Vicks VapourRub, chewable Vit C, Strepsils, anti-sandpaper tissues and handwarmers.

A Lot of Money

I used to do these 'how much does my makeup cost' posts on an annual basis and I thought I'd pick it up again- I quite like the idea of weighing up how much my face of slap costs and how it compares to what I used to wear. My number went from $150 in 2012 to $202 in 2013. For purpose of this exercise I chose the products that I used when going out to dinner last month, so that it wouldn't just be what I normally wear on an everyday basis because I've been posting about that quite frequently. In actuality I don't normally wear makeup to go to class, to church, out with the boyfriend. Sometimes I feel like wearing it to class, most days I don't.
